Chapter Five

“SOMETHING’S GOT to be done, Doc! Those freaks can’t be allowed to stay here. Look at what they’ve done to my dog!”

Abel’s jaw was clenched so hard pain shot up through his skull. “For the last time, Stan, no one did anything to your dog. These wounds are from barbed wire. Whatever King got into has nothing to do with either an animal or a shapeshifter.”

Stan shook his head, his stringy gray hair falling around his face. He was sweating and his eyes were wide, the pupils wildly dilated. Either he was scared out of his mind or he was on something. Abel knew enough about Stan Shepperton to bet it was the latter.

“It was them. It was them,” he chanted, each word louder than the last. “They tried to kill my dog!” he ended up screaming in Abel’s face, his clawed hands reaching out to grab the front of Abel’s lab coat.

Anger flashed through Abel. He pushed Stan away, being none too gentle about it. Stan shot across the room, his fingers tearing free of Abel’s coat, and fetched up against the wall with a bone-jarring thud. On the floor next to Abel, Stan’s dog, King, whined at the sudden aggression but didn’t bark or attack Abel. The Rottweiler knew better than most what his master was like and had often borne the brunt of Stan’s temper. That was why he went wandering so often.

“You shut your mouth,” Abel growled. “You shut your goddamned ignorant mouth.” Somewhere in the practice, Darcy was looking after the animals. It was madness to have let him come here, but Darcy begged for a chance to get out of the house and see where Abel worked. It hadn’t helped when Abel told him some abandoned puppies had been brought in and he was thinking of adopting one. Darcy wanted to meet the puppies too, and it would take a stronger man than Abel to resist his pleading eyes. Now, Abel regretted giving in. The last thing he wanted was for Darcy to hear this prejudiced bullshit or, worse, get hurt by this piece of shit in front of him.

“I’m keeping your dog overnight. You can get the hell out of here.”

Stan gaped at him. Fear glittered in his eyes, and then anger surged up to mask it. “You just assaulted me! I’m going to call the sheriff.” He was already reaching into his pocket for his phone.

Abel glared at him. “You do that, Stan. Call Logan.”

Stan’s hands shook as he dialed the sheriff’s office. “You won’t get away with this, Doc. I’m pressing charges.”

Abel was tempted to punch him in the face so he really had something to complain about.

King whined, his cold nose snuffling at Abel’s hand. Looking down, Abel crooned to him as he stroked along the dog’s bandaged back. A movement out of the corner of his eye had Abel’s head snapping up. Alarm widened his eyes and stopped his heart.

Darcy’s head poked round the exam-room door. He looked concerned, that expression deepening as he listened to Stan shouting down the phone.
